 CGI:

The definition CGI (Computer Generated Imagery), speaks for itself, but includes several different kind of applications, such as movies, television programs, commercials and in printed media.
CGI is used for visual effects because the quality is often higher and effects are more controllable than other more physically based processes, such as constructing miniatures for effects shots or hiring extras for crowd scenes, and because it allows the creation of images that would not be feasible using any other technology.
Below you can read more specifically, about those aspects of CGI I work with, which are based on 3D modeling and rendering.
In addition, as for some reasons, sometimes is necessary to work in post on the image, it's extremely important that a CGI artist could handle this aspect as well.
You can have a look at a few samples of creative photoretouching here

3D digital rendering:

For those of you who are not familiar with this digital image production technique, just a simple description of its main steps and advantages:
I believe that the best way to understand what 3D is, we should think about a virtual photographic set, where the subjects are three-dimensional and we can move them, or move around them, as we would do on a physical set, but without those many logistic problems.

The main steps in the 3D process are: modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering, plus animation, when requested. Each of  these stages is a science itself.

Virtual Photography:

Some might have heard the term Virtual Photography before, but if you haven't, or if this is not too familiar for you, let me explain:

There are cases where a very realistic illustration, even if made by 3D digital rendering, although beautiful and very well done, can't be enough for specific needs and an actual literally "photographic" image is required.

This often happens when we need for example, to merge a 3D rendering of a subject, into a  photographic environment. (see one sample here)

In these cases, until just a couple of years a go, only conventional photography, plus often a bunch of post processes, were the solution, with no alternative.
Now days technology went forward and developed some digital tools which allow to produce 100% photographic images, directly on computer.
